01:53 pm - Writer's Block: Get Real
i'm not a fan of most reality shows. the amazing race caught my attention this season...that would be kind of cool. i wouldn't do anything like fear factor, survivor, american idol, etc.
are game shows "reality shows"? wheel of fortune because i kick its ass.

04:13 pm - ass. i'm still waiting to hear from the railcats. i still want to work with them this summer...i also have the option (only until tomorrow) to go to the park and fill out an app for a different position there (selling tickets, merch in the gift shop, working the scoreboard, serving in the skyboxes, etc.).
i applied for an unemployment extension. it looks like it will be the same amount of $$ i've been getting for another ~4 months. probably may - august, knowing how long it takes to get the first payment.
i got a call from at&t about working in one of their retail stores (p/t sales, 25-30 hours/week). the guy said i passed the phone screening and i should be getting a call from the store manager for an interview...i figured i'd go and ask some questions about the job...but it's union. so i'm thinking it probably pays well...he said he hires people w/bachelors and masters degrees for this job.
i'd say my chances for getting this job are damn good...but will i want it? i wasn't planning on taking classes this summer, but i really, really want the job w/the railcats. i just wanted to do something FUN this summer...i'll probably never have another opportunity to do something like that.

09:08 am i'm done w/pool time! next stop, haigh quarry in kankakee, il for 4x20 min dives over a 2 day period. then i'll be open water certified!
advanced open water certification takes a weekend of open water training, and rescue diver takes another weekend...i'm hoping to get both over the summer :)
i bought a shorty, so i'm a little closer to having all of my own dive gear :) i'd love to be able to buy myself a bcd and octo by the end of next spring...esp if i continue w/divemaster training.

08:40 am - Writer's Block: A Little Green
oh yes. back in elementary school when i refused to wear green.
i used to hate st. pat's day. my birthday is march 1, so naturally on my birthday, EVERYTHING turned green. i used to hate the color green, too.
i don't know when the change happened...but i learned to love it. green, st. pat's day, beer, pots of gold...all of it :) i always wear an old navy st. pat's day tank on 3.17 now, whether it's an oldie or a brand new one. (i got a new one this year...i think my last one is from '06.)
slainte!

09:47 pm after only one swim, i am absolutely in love with scuba. it's so amazing. you should try it.
i'm torn now -- because i am going to continue with scuba training (adv. scuba, rescue diving, etc.) i don't know if i should continue to pursue the job w/the railcats. i would have 10 thursdays off if i took the job and i'd probably only be able to complete adv. scuba over the summer. if i don't get/take the job, i'd be able to complete adv. and rescue dive training and continue w/dive instructor training in the fall.
i'd be able to get a better paying (albeit still shitty paying) job over the summer if i don't hook up w/the railcats.
---
anyway, the experience! i had class first for a couple of hours (3/4 people in my class and one instructor were all at the same watchmen showing/bw3's last weekend. weird.) and learned how to use a dive table. chuck helped me get my gear together and i loaded up my car to "sneak into" the Y. (we use a back door going into some machine room. i assume pool pumps?) scuba is a HEAVY hobby. i had my bag of equipment, (mask, boots, fins, snorkel, towel, etc.) the scuba tank's bag of equipment, (bcd, weight belt, wetsuit, regulator) and a "small" tank for air. (i wore an XS bcd and it was too big...lol)
it took me 3 trips from my car to inside the door and 3 trips from inside the door to poolside. this shit is HEAVY. i can't carry the tank one handed like everyone else! :/
we had to swim 8 laps in the pool (no time limit, thank science!) and tread water for 10 minutes. 10 minutes is a long time to tread water, btw. (none of this was in any equipment...just swimsuit.)
we suited up and practiced partial mask clearing, clearing the regulator, finding a lost regulator, using a buddy's spare regulator, and we got to swim around a bit.
getting out of the pool and packed up was even more hectic than getting to the pool...we had to take all of our equipment to the locker room ti rinse off. geeeez. i guess i should start lifting weights.
we went back to the shop and unpacked. i tried on a junior bcd, but it was too small :) XS it is.
i went out to old style for a beer with a couple of the guys afterward. i heard some dive stories and apparently i have to go w/them to dive in...arkansas. i don't know about THAT...lol
i was SO SO SO nervous about getting in the water and screwing something up and i ended up doing GREAT. :) it's amazing. i highly suggest you look into just giving it a try sometime. the tank offers a discover scuba class for $30. it's a one time trip to the pool just to try out scuba to see if you like it, or to just give it a try. :)
